Polycarbonate is up to 10 times stronger than plastic lenses, has UV protection built into the material, and is nearly half as thin as regular plastic. It’s the material which has long been recommended for children’s eyewear, as well as for sports eyewear and industrial eye protection.
Plastic lenses are lighter, thinner, and retain a similar optical quality to glass. It is the cheapest lens material, however it is not always recommended for use in higher prescriptions as they can be very thick compared to other lens materials.
Trivex is a relative newcomer in lens materials. It is the lightest of all lens materials, has built-in UV protection, is resistant to stress cracking and has excellent optics. It is a recommended material for children’s eyewear, as well as rimless drilled frames and sportswear. Trivex is a mid index product and can be surfaced to a 1mm center thickness. This material outperforms poly in ballistic testing, so it is a very safe choice for children.
