What is Blue Light and How May it Effect Your Patients?
Blue light is emitted from the sun, as well as smart phones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers, TV’s, LED and fluorescent lighting. It is the shortest, highest energy wavelength in the visible light spectrum.
This kind of flickering creates a glare that can reduce visual contrast and affect sharpness and clarity. Because they are shorter, these blue, or High Energy Visible (HEV), wavelengths flicker more than the longer, low energy waves emitted at the opposite end of the spectrum.This flickering and glaring may lead to digital eyestrain and correlate with cellular damage linked to developing Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
Digital eye strain is the physical discomfort felt after prolonged exposure to digital screens, including smart phones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers. Symptoms include dry and/or irritated eyes, blurred vision, eye fatigue, neck and back pain and headaches.
Chronic blue light exposure may decrease the production of the sleep hormone melatonin. This may disrupt the natural circadian rhythm and cause abnormal sleep patterns. -
